Pet Adoption

     A word about adoptions, there are so many homeless pets, we encourage anyone that asks for our opinion on acquiring new pets, to please, please, please, adopt a pet from a shelter. They are so grateful, they make wonderful pets and will reward their owners for years to come.

     Having said that, my family and I own two dogs we bought from a breeder whom we love dearly. We also have 2 rescues that are so affectionate and grateful to have won the “pet lottery,” as my husband says.

     Please, if you’re going to purchase a pet from a breeder, do your homework. Only purchase from a breeder that you can visit the pet’s home and see the mother and father (the bitch and the stud), how they are housed, are they are part of the human family?     Make sure the mother is not continually bred without a break. This makes for weak puppies and isn’t fair to the mother. Realistically, a female should only have 3 or 4 litters in her lifetime.  

    Make sure the bloodlines are clean and not “inbred.” This makes for weak dogs with many genetic defects that lead to shorter unhealthier lives. Talk to people that have bought pets from the breeder you are considering – reputable breeders don’t mind giving you this information.

     Many breeders offer “money back guarantees” if their pets turn out not to be healthy. But, as you know, we fall in love with our pets in a very short time and can’t bear to give them up!  Instead, many people end up keeping their pets and the unscrupulous breeder knows this and preys on this part of people’s tender hearts.
